YouTube Copies Cryptocurrency With Its New Tip Jar Function - From The CoinFront

Google has added what it calls a Tip Jar to its YouTube platform. This allows users to send money to their favourite content creators.

YouTube’s Tip Jar has preset amounts of $1 or $5, or you can donate a custom amount as well. You’ll need to have Google Wallet set up, with a credit card attached to it, before you can donate.

The service is currently available only in the United States, Mexico, Japan, and Australia.

Copycats!

When it comes to tipping, the cryptocurrency world naturally has that market cornered. Bitcoin tipping has been around on Reddit for some time, but of course the Dogecoin community has mastered the art of building a community based on, among other things, tipping.

The Downside Of Tipping

While Google’s new Tip Jar feature has some drawbacks when compared to cryptocurrency tipping, and they’re a result of Google’s centralized nature.

Perhaps the most important is the fact that Google takes a cut of the donation. They take a 5% fee in order to help cover the fees involved in processing credit card transactions. On one hand, you can hardly blame them for that.

Google also skims part of each transaction for its own profit as well, taking $0.22 for each tip. That means if you tip your favourite YouTube content creator $1, they’ll only receive $0.78.

Of course, with cryptocurrency, neither of these is an issue.

Google saw a service which is enjoyed by the online community and incorporated them into their own platform. But have they really improved on it, or have they actually made it worse?

Would Google allow a tipping bot to be set up on its platform the way Reddit and Twitch have?
