Roger Ver, one of the most well-known names in the Bitcoin space, was a victim of a hack attempt in May of this year.
Swift action on the part of Ver and one of his associates deflected the hacker, and he then decided to post a significant bounty for information which led to the capture of the hacker.
Last week, Satoshi Nakamoto’s email account was hacked by an anonymous hacker who threatened to release his identity for a price. And after a bit of investigation, Roger Ver deduced that this hacker is probably the same guy who hit him. At this point, he reminded the community that the bounty on that hacker’s head was still open.
But that didn’t stop there. Ver’s new service, Bitcoin Bounty Hunter, has created a crowdfunding platform for those who want to place a bounty.
Crypto Bounty Hunters
Bounties are nothing new to the cryptocurrency world. Altcoins often use them to help develop their new coin. From website and software development to articles to help promote their coin, bounties are commonplace.
But the bounties on Bitcoin Bounty Hunter are different. According to their FAQ section, the site “is a new service that allows people to anonymously crowd source bounties to catch a particular criminal.”
Anyone can contribute bitcoins to the bounty pool. Anyone who is a position to help catch the criminal can compile all of the details proving the person’s guilt, and submit a zero knowledge proof of the evidence using proofofexistence.com Then they contact the correct “authorities” and provide all the necessary details that lead to an arrest and conviction. Once there has been a conviction, contact us with with the evidence you submitted to proof of existence. If we agree that you were the earliest person, we will pay you the bounty.
As far as the bounties allowed, anyone can post any bounty for “a person who has committed a crime in which there is a victim.”
Anyone can anonymously add to the prize of a bounty as well.
Currently on the site, three bounties have been posted. One for the Satoshi/Roger Ver hacker, one for “whoever is responsible for the missing 600K BTC from Mtgox”, and one for the thief who stole tens of thousands of BTC from Bitcoinica and Zhou Tong.
In a promotional video, Ver explains his thoughts behind the creation of this platform, which you can watch below.
