Store Your Bitcoins Online, On Paper, Or... On Vinyl? - From The CoinFront

Futuristic money being stored on 1950′s technology? It sounds bizarre, but Sound Wallet is doing just that.

If you’re looking for a secure way to store your private keys, the safest way to do it is offline. That way, even if your computer is compromised with a keystroke logger or some other form of security breach, your coins will still be safe.

Most people opt for a paper wallet, or a computer which never accesses the internet. But that’s not enough for Sound Wallet. They’re offering a new way for you to store your bitcoins offline.

7-inch vinyl.

Huh???

Yes, vinyl. That old fashioned musical format loved by hipsters, nostalgists, and certain editors of Bitcoin news websites. Now you can use vinyl to store your Bitcoin private keys!

The way it works is by translating your private key into a sound file around a minute long. It sounds like white noise, but a spectroscope can translate it into data which humans can read.

If you’re wondering where on Earth you can grab a spectroscope, there are a few different ways. You can either visit the science wing of your local university, or download an app for your phone.

Why!?

It’s a legitimate question. Is this just for the sake of strange curiosity, or is there any real benefit to a vinyl Bitcoin wallet?

Actually, yes. Digital files degrade over time, whether they’re stored on a memory card or a CD (though Sound Wallet can put your key on a CD too, if you like). And of course, a paper wallet is risky since paper is flimsy and can easily be damaged.

But data stored on vinyl never degrades, so long as it’s stored properly. So once your CD’s degrade to the point of being coasters (wait a minute, you still use CDs?), your vinyl will still play just fine!

There’s also the added bonus that few would guess a record on your shelf would be home to your bitcoins. And even if they did, they’d need a spectrometer to decode it.

Sound Wallet is selling their vinyl wallets for 0.09 BTC, and their CD wallets for 0.02 BTC on their official website.
